K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid

1) Scout

Scout scout scout... morning and evening! Do this a few days prior so you can gauge how comfortable the birds are in that field. With hunting in the morning make damn sure the birds are going into that field in the mornings.

2) Decoy Numbers

Don’t throw out every decoy you own. Set out the bare minimum that you think will get the job done... think 10 dozen silhouettes. (And if you’re not on the silhouette train then you’re making life too difficult!)

3) Spread Build

Keep your decoys spread loose with multiple pockets for the birds to sit down in... they’re still gonna be in their family groups from the Spring.

4) Calling

Keep the calling to a minimum! It’s the first day after all. There is no need to show them every note that you learned over the summer.

5) Hide

Make sure the blind/blinds are invisible!! Since you’re not running as many decoys as later in the season, you’re going to have to pay extra attention to the blind(s) because you’re not going to have that added layer of decoys between you and the birds. Make sure this a priority when you set up!

Bonus tip

Call the birds close and try to avoid shooting into the big wads. Dead birds tell no tales. It’s a long season and the longer you can go without educating the birds in your area the happier everyone will be.

Good luck and stay safe this season! Bye for now!
